Won't Update Subscription Level After Successful Payment

I have an inconsistent error when an account has been demoted to Subscriber Level after the EOT that when a successful payment is made with PayPal, it claims that it cannot update the subscriber level.

One the same account within 10 minutes I was able to go from this error to being able to update just fine. When trying to duplicate the error, I was unsuccessful.

I am running S2 Membership (free) on WordPress 4.4.2. PHP version unknown.

Any direction in this would help.

One thought which does work but would like to void is deleting the account instead of demoting the account when EOT has expired.

Have you tried reproducing this in a clean WordPress installation? Could be a theme/plugin conflict.
