Unwanted users signing up

We are having numerous people spam signup on this site. How do I stop people from signing up? We are very limiting in who can signup. Can we stop all the new signups?

I recommend using the WP Bruiser plugin. See https://wordpress.org/plugins/goodbye-captcha/ The WordPress tab has the setting to protect the login form from spammers, but the plugin contains lots of other useful settings too.
