Why do the S2member short codes cause a line break and show up on the next line? I have attempted to embed the codes in a single line but they typically shift to a new line automatically.

That’s a WordPress issue. WordPress auto-paragraphs everything and it is a pain to override. Usually themes have a [raw][/raw] wrapper shortcode that you can use to avoid this WordPress Autop issue.
