Email is already registered error

I don’t know if this is an S2 Member problem or not so would appreciate any thoughts or advice.

Someone has tried to register on my website but received the error “Email is already registered” so they contacted me for help. I searched the registered users for their email address but couldn’t find it. I therefore decided to add them as a new user manually. When I tried to save the details I received the same error message in the Wordpress Admin screen saying the “Email is already registered”.

I have searched the membership database and no one is already using this email address. I have also exported my membership database from S2 and the email address isn’t in the data.

Could this be an S2 problem or is it a core Wordpress membership problem?
Has anyone ever seen this before?

That’s a WP issue. The only thing that s2Member does with registrations is modify the role to which someone is allocated.
