Assigning membership numbers

Hi folks

I would like to assign membership numbers to our members. We are running a card and web based scheme and it is essential that we can auto assign a membership number to our card based users and allow our business based users to look them up using said number.

Is there a simple way to achieve this?

Can not use “username” instead “membership number”? S2M don’t have such numbers, will need custom code…
