502 Bad Gateway after PayPal checkout

Hi,

After checkout PayPal sends me to a 502 bad gateway page. I have triple checked all of my API settings and return URL. All of that seems good. Here’s my button code.

None of them work. What could be preventing it from going to the thank you page and why the 502 error? Any advice would be welcome. Thank you!

Hit F12 on your keyboard to bring up the browser debug window, select the Network tab, refresh the page and see what address the 502 is failing on.

So the 502 Bad Gateway error goes away - but still no thank you page!

Uninstall your s2member plugin (and s2member pro plugin if using it) and re-install. You should not be getting 500 errors for that file.

Hi, Tim.

I uninstalled both plugins ( I am using Pro) and reinstalled. I am still getting the 502 error. When I refresh the page it does display thank you text and registration emails are arriving.

Could there be an issue with the button code? And it does not take me to the thank you page as intended.

I’m a bit confused. You started off with a 502 error with no “thank you” page, then you had 500 errors with no 502 error and the “thank you” page worked, and now you have no 500 errors, a 502 error, the text is being displayed and the registration email is getting delivered but the redirect is not working.

Hit F12 and select the network tab and tell me what the 502 error info is. The last time you did this you reported 500 errors but no 502 error. Now that you have a 502 error you need to look at the network debug to find out why. I’m assuming he 502 is coming from PayPal.

The 502 error resolves after I hit refresh to inspect the Network panel. As I mentioned, when I refresh the 502 Bad Gateway page it takes me to a generic thank you text.

This time I had the Network panel open when performing the paypal transaction. Here is the 502 error.

You need to do the F12 test again but look in two other places: 1) Headers-Response (returned meta-data) 2) Response (returned data) to see what info was returned. See following sample debug trace from another thread to see where to look:

You’re still getting 500 errors accessing the plugin. You need to fix that. Talk to your hosting company. See the following screenshot:

Before contacting your host, disable any security plugins and try again. I just helped another user with messaging issues that turned out to be caused by his security plugin (see Paypal Payment Not Updating Membership Level).

If that doesn’t fix it then contact your host and just do a screenshot like the sample I provided you above that includes the 500 errors.

Thanks for the follow-up and sorry for the continued issues! I went ahead and bumped the server resources way up and made a test purchase from the /test-workshop. I was unfortunately able to recreate the 502 error as well. Do you know when the issue started or has it always been this way?

As my colleague mentioned, the return URL is extremely long, do you know if S2 perhaps has a way to shorten it?:

As for the 500 error, immediately after the order a request with a 500 response is sent to:

And it shows this error:

ERROR: s2Member unable to locate WordPress directory.

I took a look at the file and it looks like the plugin is using a variable “wp_dir” to detect the wordpress directory. On our cloud platform, we store the WordPress core files (wp-admin, wp-includes, etc.) in a separate location for easier maintenance and for security. To find the Wordpress directory, they can use a call to ABSPATH which will always return “/www/.wordpress”.

We also searched our ticketing system and so far we haven’t seen any other S2 Member plugin users have this same error, so it is a bit puzzling. Let us know if there’s anything else the plugin developer would like for us to try.

That is a possible problem.

It begs the question…did this work before and it stopped working or is this a new installation and you are attempting to get it to work.

Next step (actually it is a step that should have been first if you can reproduce this error) is to enable the s2member debug logs and look in there. See: Dashboard → s2Member → Log Files (Debug) → Logging Configuration

I haven’t looked at s2member logs for years. I assumed they might shed some light on your errors since it appears to be a timeout in the request from s2member to the gateway.

Sorry I’m not offering more specific help but I have multiple sites running PayPal and Stripe for years with no errors except for the recent Stripe / PayPal double payment issues plaguing everyone.
